Yesterday we honored Our Lady of Guadalupe's 2023 Students of the Year.  Always a fascinating luncheon to meet our young community leaders, this was particularly special with accomplishments and character specialities illuminated by OLG Principal April Beuder and English teacher Jack Moore.  Congratulations Carli and Angelina!
Proud to be working with the Weiss Foundation to provide scholarships to girls and boys in Kenya so that they can go to High School. Our scholars just started high school via boarding school and it is a very big deal! If it wasn’t for outside support, many would be home instead.
Thanks to the collective spirit and hard work of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, Saturday, March 11th will mark the 27th year for the Hermosa Beach St. Patrick's Day Parade!  According to it's co-founder and our current club president, J Travers Devine, St. Pat's is a "uniquely American event that only caught on in Ireland as a 'thing' in the 90's.   It was a celebration of the freedom Irish immigrants found in America to speak their language which was prohibited and practice their religion, also prohibited in Ireland by their English Colonial masters. "Step dancing" was also prohibited. 700 years the Brits ruled Ireland, mostly with an iron fist. The Irish in Boston & NYC began St. Pat's parades in the late 1800’s."

Welcome back President Travers Devine for the Rotary year 2022-23! This is Travers' second term as club president, his prior term 2014-2015.  Travers relocated from the South Bay to his poolside home in Riverside a few years back while continuing support to Rotary as a Paul Harris sustaining member and as the Hermosa Beach club's International Chair and liaison to our sister club in the Philippines Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

Today, over 70 million people are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children.

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.  As a humanitarian organization, peace is a cornerstone of our mission.

We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect.

Every day since the brutal Russian invasion of the Ukraine, John Hewko has connected with those under attack.

Hewko, the General Secretary and CEO of Evanston-based Rotary International, takes out his cell phone and calls people he knows in Kyiv and in other parts of that nation, friends and family.

Hewko understands Ukraine and the current plight of Ukrainians far better than do most Americans.

His parents escaped from Ukraine during World War II. Hewko later went to there to work and, as a young lawyer in 1991, helped write the first draft of Ukraine’s post-Soviet constitution.

Education shapes the future of an individual.  It may seem accessible to most of us but it is often unattainable for many.  Rotary International established Education as one of its primary areas of focus throughtout the world.  Hermosa Beach Rotary has supported several initiatives both locally and internationally.

The Weiss Scholarship Foundation (based out of the Chicago area)- is a charitable organization striving to support Kenya’s children through mentorship and learning opportunities for high school education.   Come learn more tomorrow, November 30 at 12:15 p.  All are welcome.

If you would like the link to join us via zoom tomorrow- please email:  info@hermosabeachrotary.org.

Hermosa Beach Rotarian, Dean Nota, and Past President, returns to the podium in-person at the Rotary Youth Building.  The building is open and all are welcome.  If interested in renting the facility please email: info@hermosabeachrotary.org.

Making a difference

Rotary members and program participants are improving lives in communities around the world every day through thousands of service projects. Explore the good work that we’re doing locally and globally, and share these projects through social media.

Longstanding supporters of Hermosa Beach schools, the HB Rotary Club Foundation provides funding for numerous programs that support students in all facets of their educational experience- from leadership skills to sports to the arts and sciences.  We are proud to be part of the expansion of the Hermosa Beach Youth Music Program and look forward to Mr. Harrison's next concert!

Heartbroken to lose Mike Welch, we commemorate his fascinating life and commitment to Service.

Mike joined Hermosa Beach Rotary in 2012 after attending a meeting to honor his son Andrew, who was named Student of the Month.  He was so very proud of his family and his community.  Mike had many talents and served in a variety of capacities to manage the building rentals in addition to holding the position of both secretary and treasurer for several years.

Mike was an active board member for many years with the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter 53 and in addition was the collaborator for our club with  other local Vietnam Veterans who created and maintained the Memorial at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.

A frequent speaker, Mike shared stories about his worldwide travels, including family treks to Australia, moreover his remarkable career with the U.S. Air Force CMSgt (ret) Mike M. Welch, and Boeing, as a “pathfinder loadmaster”.  C-17s have played a vital role of delivering military personnel and equipment and often critical support to deliver humanitarian aid, especially in dire situations like the 2012 Haiti earthquake.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Scouting program (BSA).  A Scout who attains this rank is called an Eagle Scout or Eagle. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young people, however, nationally, only about 7% achieve it.

On March 30 we will meet four honorees from Hermosa Beach Troop 860 who have achieved this remarkable achievement.   See more detail below.

District Leader, James Jackman, enlightened the Hermosa Beach club about current activities in Rotary's Youth Exchange program.   RYE provides 15 to 18 year olds the opportunity to discover another culture by spending time overseas.  In the long term exchange program, the students live for a full year in another country hosted by Rotarians.  They experience a new culture, learn a new language and make lifelong friends.  The short term program gives students the opportunity to spend 3 months during the summer overseas.
