May Students of the Month

Branton Fasola is a young man of many talents and just as many smiles. He first volunteered to play Happy Birthday to Dave Garrett on our rickety piano.  It turns out he is self-taught via YouTube and didn't really warm up to professional lessons. He plays several sports  and has received a special award for umpiring and helping out at Clark Field. Branton spends time reparing older computers, likes both math and social studies and looks forward to a career in Engineering. His teachers identify him as "humble", while his parents Beth and Jim appreciate that he is self-motivated, kind and always smiling.  Congratulations Branton!
Lucy Olsen is a hard charger  and natural leader.  A member of the HVS Student Council, she spends volunteer time with the National Charity League on a project that helps rescue dogs adjust to potential new families.  Athletically she plays soccer and runs cross country.  Academically she likes reading, art and social studies.  Her teachers find her "inspiring" while her parents Seth & Megan appreciate that she is a self-starter, wants to make an impact in whatever she does, yet also has a good heart. Congratulations, Lucy!

spoils from the glenn miller concert success

When Hermosa Rotary agreed to sponsor the Glenn Miller Orchestra concert in March to benefit the HVS Music Program, no one was quite sure how well it would be received in the community,  No doubt the music was spectacular, the HVS Jazz Band had a moment to remember, and all in the audience were thrilled that they came.  Plus, much to everyone's relief, ticket sales more than covered all the not-unsubstantial costs to put on the concert.  Additionally, a number of  community members were so inspired they made additional donations through our Foundation to benefit HVS music.  Here Hermosa Rotary Foundation Treasurer Jody presents a $5,000 check to Dr. Buddy Clements and Principal Jessica Bledsoe so they can do something special for HVS musicians.

MTAC Artists of the future are awarded the bob peterson memorial recognition scholarship

Each year the South Bay Chapter of the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC) hold a competition so select four South Bay music students to play solos with the Beach Cities Symphony.  While these young people are accomplished and multiple award winners on their chosen instruments, they relish the opportunity to play in front of the Beach Cities Symphony.

Now Hermosa Rotary adds to this honor by awarding them a $500 Scholarship and Recognition Certificate in Bob Peterson's Memory.  For those who may not know, Bob was an active orchestra member (French Horn) and leader of the Beach Cities Symphony from its beginnings in 1949 and was also a member of Hermosa Rotary from 1950 until his passing in 2021.  We are pleased to remember his legacy to both organizations in this way.
