Chelsea Neer smiles between proud parents Jeff and Kristen. She loves dance, soccer and, maybe most of all, travel. Chelsea enjoys helping others through the Charity League, LA Works, and in her everyday life. Proud of having only on B in Middle School (Math), she looks forward to attending Mira Costa next year. She plans to attend a good college and find a career that allows her to travel. With her infectious grin, she mentioned several times wanting to go to Asia, virtually elbowing her parents in the ribs as she did.
Music Mends Minds
inspires Joy for many
John Kander, a Santa Monica Rotarian, brought us the heartwarming and emotional story of "Music Mends Minds", a Rotary affiliated non-profit that organizes musical activities for people with dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons and other neurodegenerative conditions.
Neurologists have discovered that the area of the brain that retains musical memory is not impacted by these terrible brain diseases, so that those who are fading away from normal social interactions are brought to life when presented with the opportunity to sing or play instruments. The many success stories are most inspiring, not the least of which is the organization's Flagship group: The 5th Dementia Band.
We encourage all to investigate this inspiring organization.
Join us May 16 in celebrating a new tradition: The Bob Peterson Memorial Beach Cities Symphony Artists of the Future Scholarship Awards will be presented by Hermosa Rotary to the winners of the annual MTAC Competition. As many readers will know, Bob joined both Beach Cities Symphony and Hermosa Rotary in 1950 and was an active leader in both organizations until his passing in 2021. The Hermosa Rotary Foundation, with the support of Past District 5280 Governor D.J. Sun, is pleased to join with BCS and MTAC in adding a monetary award for these budding musical artists to be presented at the concert.
